Lead Magnets…A Bribe To Subscribe

Getting high quality leads is hard work. Getting a person interested in what you are promoting is hard work. If it is digital or internet marketing related I think there is a level of suspicion.

We ask people to give us their personal information for free just so we can sell them something. We may know its a quality product but we have to convince our visitors that it is. You are probably thinking that this is what a landing page is for. There is only so much information you can put on a landing page.

There is also the sales page that is usually written by the creator of the product. Here is a sales page by Cedric Aubrey, the creator of 43 WordPress Tutorials affiliate. When you click on this link and study the sales page you will notice that even though the visitor can purchase this product, you the affiliate has no way of capturing your buyer.

We want to capture the buyer and make that person a lead so we can start a relationship with that person and hopefully have a customer for life.

My suggestion is to promote a lead magnet on your landing page first. The lead magnet has to be of high quality and be original. If not then you will probably loose a potential lead to another marketer that has a great lead magnet.

What is a Lead Magnet

According to marketingterms.com and I quote “A specific deliverable that is offered to prospects in return for contact information, typically to join an email list.”

Or the street definition: A bribe to subscribe offer

If you notice in the definition above the lead magnet is only used to get prospects to your email list. At this point, according to some marketers, you are not going to pitch your product. This is where you are going to start the relationship.

That is one school of thought. The other is that your job is to promote products and you can start out just doing that. Some successful marketers think that if you are handing out free stuff everytime you send an email your leads will be absolutely shocked when you promote a product.

I think handing out free stuff to your leads all the time is kind of like buying a relationship with free gifts. As the Beetles sing “Can’t Buy Me Love”.

Why should I Try Lead Magnets

There are alot of reasons to try lead magnets, Google is full of advice on this subject. I think the most important one is that if you target a lead magnet to a certain genre then they will reciprocate in return. This gives you insight in what your audience is all about and visa versa.

For instance, say you create a landing page that is offering a lead magnet that is a free video tutorial on SEO. Your prospects see what you are offering them in exchange for their email address.

Here is where I say that this will help you grow your reputation because you will be delivering SEO info and tools to them. You are going in a straight line as the lead magnet has alerted them to the fact that you are a person with an interest in delivering high quality products and info in SEO. The prospects that are looking for that on the internet will consider this when they join your list.

On the other hand you happen to have a product you want to promote. In my case its the product by Cedric Aubrey called 43 WordPress Tutorials.affiliate The best lead magnet for that is one that is in the same niche as wordpress products but it is free of course. Remember the short definition for leadmagnets, A bribe to subscribe offer.

Lead Magnets and Landing Pages

This is where your landing page comes into play. Your landing page is going to sell this lead magnet for you. Your going to get tons of leads with the lead magnet this landing page is going to push for you.

Check out the landing page below. The lead magnet is 10 articles for free. If you write your own content or if you are interested in free information you may want to opt-in. Notice how the content “bait” has buttered up the marketer reading it by calling the prospect a smart marketer.

This company that put out this landing page is no slouch, they do offer minidegrees and online courses to the prospects that signup.

Lead Magnet Landing Page by https://cxl.com/

This is a landing page because it has a heading, a sub-heading, two bullet points, a form and a button. The only difference is that it is promoting a lead magnet not a product. The lead magnet is the 10 Articles that are being given away for free in return for an email address.

Here is a lead magnet I would like to share with you: CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD

Once you get over the hurdle of choosing a lead magnet that is original and goes with your product. Creating a landing page with the autoresponder form take a moment to catch your breathe.

Conclusion: By now you have realized that it takes time to create your own funnel for your product. When you have finished with the lead page and the landing page plus setting up your autoresponder what are you going to do with the leads that sign up. In my next post I will be telling you about the thank you page that your subscribers will receive after they sign up.

Sincerely,

The affiliate links are products that I endorse and it is up to you to buy or not.

Your subscribers are safely tucked away in your Autoresponder

In my last post about Email Marketing I talked about the first steps to capture a lead, with the most information on how to create and use a capture page.

In this post we are going to discuss the action to be taken after your guest has signed up with you.

Your visitor has signed up with you through your capture page and is now safely at home in your autoresponder.

What is an Autoresponder

If you want to start collecting your own leads and subscribers you will need an autorsponder. This will be your first expense.

I have found that there is all kinds of autoresponders

Heres some info from Tool Tester.

Free Autoresponders

This is probably the best way to send emails to your list if you have under 50 subscribers. This involves a google spreadsheet. Jaime says it does not involve alot of work, you do have to put the email addresses into the spreadsheet.

Autoresponders that are included in another program:

http://freeadvertisingforyou.com/FAFYAIOPJT.php?r=&r2=

These are not free they usually are only available to you if you up grade. There is only one I know of and it is called Easy Traffic Boost affiliate

Easy traffic Boost requires you to put the raw HTML that is you capture page form into a box they give you in the “Edit My Details” Tab.

Some “FREE” autoresponders are only free up to a certain number of emails or subscribers a month. If you go over the limit they charge you.

Mail Chimp is one of these. Aweber affiliate charges $19.00 a month for up to 500 subscribers. They go up to $149.00 a month for 25,000 subscribers. There is no free plan but a free trial period that lasts 30 days.

I used them for awhile and liked them very much but being the cheapskate that I am i use Trafficwave affiliate which is $17.95 a month for as many subscribers that you can handle.

Domain Name

This is the next expense. You really do not need a domain name if you are going to use a third party program with a built in autoresponder. I do not use third party autoresponders so I really do not know.

Domain names are not really that expensive. I have a few including the one that is this blog. A personal domain will cost you $8.99 a year on Namecheap.com

Hosting

In order to capture leads with your capture you can use third party landing pages.

If you are a “pro” member in freeadvertisingforyou.com affiliate you can set up 2 splash pages into capture pages.

If you want to create your very own capture pages and thankyou pages a domain and hosting is another way to go. This will be an expense. Namecheap shared Hosting starts at 0.82 cents for the first year and then starts to go up.

Theres 000webhost.com. They are 100% free for all you budgeters out there. Word to the Wise, they have been hacked before. you cam read all about it here:

https://www.troyhunt.com/breaches-traders-plain-text-passwords/

I happened to be on my favorite safelist last night and saw an ad for this hosting company. This is a brand new hosting company with a completely different slant on things.

http://static.eightwebhosting.com/special/?aid=377515

The top hosting program for 2020 is Bluehost. It starts at $2.95 for the first year and $7.99 after that for one website. It has a great affiliate program where you earn $65.00 for each sign-up.

Conclusion: This is the second post in a series on Email Marketing. The next post will be about lead magnets and thank you pages.

A lot of people including me take lead magnets very seriously. A lead magnet is the catalyst that entices the visitor to sign up via your capture page.

A thank you page is the first email that your new subscriber will see in his/her inbox.

Until next time

There is No Shortcut to Becoming an Email Marketer

Email Marketing as a way to promote your product.

When I started promoting on the internet the last thing I thought I would be doing is email marketing. It was a big yawn.

My excuse was that I needed a big list to even send a promotional email. I think I just felt overwhelmed.

It is a big job with steps leading to that email you are about to send.

Lets start at the beginning:

  • You need a squeeze page.
  • You need to promote your squeeze page.
  • This means you need traffic.
  • The leads that you capture will than be stored in a autoresponder.
  • You will then use emails to communicate with your leads. These emails are stored in campaigns in your autoresponder.

Everything now is up to you and your autoresponder.

Lets talk about the 4 steps at the top concerning how you capture your leads.

Before we start there are several names that a squeeze page is called, its also called a capture page and a landing page. It all comes down to the fact that the reason they all exist is to capture leads.

The simplest form you can use is a squeeze page. This is a splash page with an autoresponder form on it. It also has a head line in bold letters at the top telling the reader what you are promoting. With at least 3 bullet points giving the reader information about your product.

The squeeze page should be straight to the point with as little words as possible. The graphics should be colorful. The CTA should be agressive.

Squeeze pages are used in traffic exchanges and safelists where people are flying through lots of promotions that are vying for their attention. You should try to stand out from the crowd.

Here is an example of a squeeze page:

Notice there is 2 boxes for the visitors name and email address, plus a button text. This is the form which gathers this info and sends it to your autoresponder.

Splash Page:

Splash Page

Notice the Splash Page does not have an autoresponder form just a CTA button. That button is conected to an affiliate link where the visitor can join as a member in what is being promoted.

Check this link now for more on these types of squeeze pages:

https://bestaffiliate.org/wp-admin/post.php?post=2693&action=edit

This is the simplest promotion tool, the more elaborate example would be a landing page like this.

https://www.zendesk.com

There is so many elements about a squeeze page that has to be right, the copy, the headline, the images, the CTA button, the color. Its very tough.

You can model other peoples squeeze pages. Find out what they did right and analyze what could be improved and apply it to your squeeze page.

Here is an example of the best squeeze page I have ever used, it gets me more leads in this niche

https://bestaffiliate.org/e3aj

Do you know that 8 out of 10 people will read the headline while only 2 out of 10 will read the rest of the content. Your headline is the first impression you make on your reader.

Notice the headline on this capture page, does it make you want to read the rest of the page. For somebody who wants to make money this is a very enticing headline.

Sub Heading

A sub heading is necessary if you feel that your proposition is not covered by the heading. Remember that you want to tell people about your proposition in as less words as possible.

In the squeeze page below the heading and sub-heading seem to become one message.

Here is a capture page where the Heading is enough to convey the message the owner wants to send. Also the CTA button stands out nicely with the text on the button clear and to the point.

Call To Action

Some people call the CTA button the most important element on your capture page. The button, when pressed sends the information that is gathered to your autoresponder. This is where the visitor is turned into a lead or a subscriber.

The text on the button is the “Call To Action”. It should be to the point and have a sense of a time limit. Example I made up:

  • Sign Up Now
  • Sign Up Free
  • Get The Details
  • Try It Free

The color of the button is very important. The button has to stand out on the page. You can use the color that represent your company. The color should be bold and strong and make sure you can read the text on the button. Make the text a contrasting color. Black button, white text for example.

Below is a capture page with a CTA button that really stands out

There is a new kind of capture page that has more to it then the traditional one. It is a built in funnel as well is a capture page. I will explain it to you in my next post.

Squeeze pages are just half of the equation though. The other half is the autoresponder they are attached to.

There is no shortcut to becoming an email marketer.

The capture page or as it is called, the squeeze page is the first step of your journey in email marketing. You can create your own or have somebody else create one for you. Autoresponders offer capture page templates that are very nice and will save you alot of time.

In conclusion I will tell you about this new capture page that is like a funnel. These cutting edge capture pages are going along with the trend that you need to nuture your visitor as well as offer a nice lead magnet.

So in the next post will be information about autoresponders, domain names and hosting. So until then,

Happy Marketing,

Jacqueline Buckley
